R commander (Rcmdr)

R provides a powerful and comprehensive system for analysing data and when used in conjunction with the R-commander (a graphical user interface, commonly known as Rcmdr) it also provides one that is easy and intuitive to use. Basically, R provides the engine that carries out the analyses and Rcmdr provides a convenient way for users to input commands. The Rcmdr program enables analysts to access a selection of commonly-used R commands using a simple interface that should be familiar to most computer users. It also serves the important role of helping users to implement R commands and develop their knowledge and expertise in using the command line --- an important skill for those wishing to exploit the full power of the program.

Information about installing R can be found on the web at the R homepage http://www.r-project.org/ which provides lots of information about the R project and also directs users to one of the CRAN sites (the Comprehensive R Archive Network) that have been set up on many servers across the world in order for users to download the software. CRAN provides all files necessary to install R on a number of different computing platforms (Linux, MacOS X and Windows) along with detailed information about installation and also offers manuals and contributed documentation in a number of langauges and for a number of specific disciplines.

R commander Plugins (RcmdrPlugin)

A number of plugins are available that provide direct access to R packages through the Rcmdr interface. These plugins are installed in the same way as for other R packages (for information about installation see www.UsingRcmdr.com) and can be loaded via the R-console or by using the Rcmdr menus `Tools, Load Rcmdr plugin(s)..'. There are currently 29 Plugins that provide support for specific analyses, graphics, books and teaching. No soy bueno con las metáforas pero intentaré una que te ayude a entender todo sobre los “paquetes” en R. Para que te hagas una idea, bajarte el R en tu computadora es como comprar un auto nuevo de tienda, cuando compras el auto lo pruebas y verificas si cumple sus funciones principales sin contratiempos. Una vez que lo empiezas a usar quizás te das cuenta que necesitas más accesorios o mejorar partes de tu carro ya existente o si lo quieres llevar a lugares especiales (como la playa o el campo) necesitarás accesorios que te ayuden a solucionar tu problema. Pasa exactamente lo mismo con R; cuando te bajas el programa te viene con unas características y “paquetes” básicos pero existen miles de paquetes que puedes agregar para poder hacer cosas geniales en R. En este post te enseñaremos a instalarlos y solucionar problemas que se puedan presentar.

Los paquetes son las extensiones que el R necesita para poder hacer ciertas funciones.
R es un proyecto colaborativo por lo que existen miles de personas trabajando con R sin distinguir profesiones. Para que vean la dimensión de lo que estoy hablando mientras escribo esto existen más de 4000 paquetes disponibles para una infinidad de utilidades.

Hay dos formas de instalar paquetes: directamente de internet o desde un archivo zipeado (.zip)

Lo cual significa que te están pidiendo que elijas el servidor repositorio del cual bajaras el paquete. Existen muchas universidades que ofrecen ser repositorios de R, elije cualquiera

Si te sale el error “no se pudo encontrar la función” es que has escrito mal : install.packages. Si ves la línea de error en mi caso le agregué una l demás.

Quiere decir que no has escrito bien el nombres del paquete o que tienes que actualizar el R

Después que has elegido el país el R comienza a descargar el paquete y es probable que salga algún mensaje si después de todos los mensajes te sale el cursor > y ningún mensaje de “error” y ves la barra que empieza a descargar es que todo salió muy bien.

Si después de seleccionar el país te sale el siguiente mensaje “Aviso: unable to access a index for repository ….” Significa que tu firewall está evitando la conexión. Eso pasa por ejemplo en mi chamba que los de informática bloquean el acceso a descargas. En este caso tienen que instalar desde un zip local

Desde un ZIP local

Primero tienes que bajarte el ZIP que contiene el paquete desde la página de R allí seleccionas la opción CRAN y en la ventana que se abre eliges el país de tu preferencia y en las opciones de la izquierda eliges “Packages”. Inmediatamente se abrirá una página con todos los paquetes disponibles, seleccionas el de tu preferencia y luego lo bajas según tu sistema operativo.

Cuando el paquete ya está en tu disco duro recién vas al programa y eliges la opción paquetes, se desplegará el menú y al final está la opción “Instalar paquetes desde archivos ZIP locales” se te abre el menú de búsqueda, eliges el archivo y listo

Si es que quieres usar el paquete, después que los has instalado, usas la función library(foreign)
